Say Goodbye to Microbeads
Just last week, President Obama signed the “Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015” law that phases out the use of solid microbeads that have been popular in personal care products, such as face cleansers and toothpastes, for the past several years.
The reason behind the discontinued use of microbeads is because these beads are made from plastic that does not dissolve, leading to the pollution of waterways and endangers the wildlife that may consume the microbeads.
One study supporting the ban of microbeads said that more than 8 trillion individual microbeads were being released into American waterways each day. These beads have also polluted lakes and even the ocean.
There is also an ongoing study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that is researching whether or not there may be a health concern for humans who eat fish and other animals who have previously digested microbeads.
